At a glance
The rate of access to electricity in Togo is in progression (from 17% in 2000 to 35% in 2016) but with huge disparities between urban areas (access rate = 87%) and rural (access rate = 7%). Renewable energies (solar, wind, etc.) are present in the electricity generation capacity of the country. Access to clean cooking solutions does not reach 7% nationally.
In the recent years, an effort has been made for the electrification of major cities of the country, but the rural electrification is still challenging.
Over 90% of Togolese urban households do not have access to clean cooking. The supply of butane gas channels are not sufficiently decentralized and the gas price and the purchase cost of user equipment significantly limit the access of the majority of the population to modern cooking fuel.
The country is an ECOWAS member and, with the rest of the region, adopted a concerted approach to the implementation of the SEforALL Country Action, with the development of the Action Agenda alongside the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Action Plans, and their formal adoption.
According to the gap analysis developed in 2012, to achieve the objectives of the SEforALL initiative in Togo, the current level of investment would need to be multiplied by 14, to achieve universal access to modern energy services, improve the global energy efficiency and improve the share of renewables in the energy mix.
This will require strong institutional, political and financial commitments. The technical and financial cooperation, at sub regional, regional and international levels will be necessary to fill the gap that will be left by the lack of national resources.
The SEforALL implementation is followed by a focal point in the Direction Générale de l’Energie.
